MachWarrior 5 Mercenaries Game Basics

MachWarrior 5

MachWarrior 5 Mercenaries Game is a first-person shooter video game developed by High Moon Studios for Windows and Xbox 360 platforms. It was released in North America on September 2009 and in Europe on October 2009. It is the fifth installment in the MachWarrior series, following the first three games in the series. The game was released with six different multiplayer modes, including team deathmatch, capture the flag, and “King of the Jungle”.

In an unspecified year in a previously unnamed future, MachWarrior 3: The Final Payback, the player character is being dragged into battle by his ally, a cyborg called the Master Chief, in a bid to save the world from a hostile alien race called the Scrin. The Scrin are using a powerful weapon called the Nova-Cannon to destroy the Earth and its last surviving human population, the Chief’s allies, in order to invade an alien dimension where they possess a powerful energy source called the Nexus. The Chief and his allies are being pursued by the Scrin through the various levels of the ship Prometheus. The character’s main motivation for the story is to defeat the Scrin and gain the power to save the human race.

Gameplay

The game features six multiplayer modes, including team deathmatch, capture the flag, and “King of the Jungle”. The player and their ally/team are armed with conventional firearms, as well as heavy weapons, such as machine guns and grenade launchers. The player also has the ability to switch weapons, and can use the character’s jetpack to move around the environment (unlike the previous games, where the jetpack is purely for aerial combat). The player can also use an armor-piercing round with the character’s machine gun to destroy small metal boxes.

The game takes place on a 3D map, with environments which can be destroyed by gunfire, grenades, or vehicles. The game also features destructible walls (although some of them are merely weak spots and will not immediately crumble), allowing the player to destroy or hide behind them to avoid enemy fire. The player can also use explosives to destroy walls, as well as buildings, vehicles, and even enemies. The player can access more powerful weapons, such as rocket launchers, from locked crates, which must be found using the game’s in-game map. The map is also filled with enemy soldiers, though they are not as aggressive as in previous games. The player can also use a variety of vehicles to assist them, such as the Chief’s jetpack, tanks, and helicopters.

MachWarrior 5 Mercenaries has five main levels. The first is the main ship, the Prometheus, which the player must protect from an onslaught of Scrin soldiers. There are two more levels of smaller vessels. The fourth level is a “jungle” level, where the player can find the crates of weapons, and must defend them from hostile alien wildlife, including boars, elephants, and scorpions. The final level is the final showdown, where the player must battle the last of the Scrin and their Nexus energy source. After the player defeats the Scrin, they must escape the ship and retrieve the Master Chief’s armor, which will allow him to reach the final level, where he can destroy the nexus.

Plot

After several years of military research and development, Dr. Halsey, a former US Army officer, created the MachWarrior, a cyborg designed to combat the Scrin, a hostile alien race. However, unknown to the MachWarrior’s creators, the Scrin were using the MachWarrior as a weapon. The Scrin invaded Earth and captured the MachWarrior, who was now being used to attack the human population in an attempt to find the Nexus, a powerful energy source being used by the Scrin to destroy Earth. The MachWarrior escaped from the Scrin’s custody and fought his way to the Prometheus, the Scrin’s flagship, in a bid to rescue his creator and the rest of the human population.

Reception

MachWarrior 5 Mercenaries Game received “average” reviews on both platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.

The game was praised for its gameplay and graphics, with reviewers saying it improved on the previous games, and that the game is quite entertaining. However, the game’s multiplayer modes were criticized. While the games on the Xbox 360 were deemed to be more enjoyable than those on the PC, the game’s AI was criticized, as well as its lack of a single-player campaign, which was called a “huge disappointment”, because it was thought that High Moon Studios “has done everything possible to keep single
